Frank Morano, Staten Island Leaders Deliver Victory for Lucy the Pig
When the Gannone family of Tottenville found themselves fighting to keep their beloved pet pig, Lucy, Councilman Frank Morano didn’t hesitate to act. What started as an anonymous complaint and a threat of fines quickly became a community-wide effort, led by Morano and supported by several Staten Island elected officials, to do what was right.
Lucy, a 15-year-old pygmy pig and emotional support animal, has been part of the Gannone family for years. But outdated city rules banning pet pigs suddenly put her future — and the peace of mind of her family — in jeopardy.
Morano worked closely with Borough President Vito Fossella, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, Assemblyman Mike Reilly, and former Councilman Joe Borelli to fight for Lucy. Together, they spoke out, called on Mayor Eric Adams to intervene, and stood with thousands of Staten Islanders who signed a petition urging the city to let Lucy stay.
Thanks to their efforts, and the overwhelming support of the community, Mayor Adams ultimately agreed that Lucy posed no harm and should remain with her family. The decision brought relief to the Gannones and showed what can happen when local officials and residents work together for a good cause.
“This was about standing up for a family, standing up for what’s right, and making sure city government works for the people,” Morano said. “I was proud to work alongside my colleagues to get this done for Staten Island.”
The Lucy story is a reminder that common sense can prevail — and that Staten Island’s leaders will always step up when it matters most.
